What happened
The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, witnessed a live demonstration of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services going live in Greece through the Eurobank-NIPL partnership at Eurobank headquarters in Athens. The development marks an overseas expansion of India’s digital payment ecosystem and adds Greece to the list of international locations where UPI-linked payment use cases are being enabled.
The minister was in Greece with a delegation of senior business leaders and officials to advance bilateral economic cooperation and strengthen commercial partnerships between India and Greece.
What changed now
UPI services are now being demonstrated in Greece through a banking partnership, which means eligible customers can use an India-origin digital payment rail for instant and secure transfers in a foreign market. The key shift is from domestic scale to cross-border visibility and acceptance, which strengthens the case for UPI as a digital public infrastructure platform with international relevance.
