What happened
India and New Zealand announced a Strategic Partnership in Auckland, New Zealand on 11 July 2026 and endorsed a Roadmap to 2030. The roadmap is a shared framework for joint action over the next four years and covers diplomacy, defence, trade, people-to-people links, education, science and technology, disaster management, and regional cooperation.
The Prime Ministers also clarified that the roadmap creates no financial commitments and does not create any legally binding rights or obligations under domestic or international law.
Background and earlier position
India-New Zealand ties had already included several sectoral arrangements before the 2026 roadmap. The new framework consolidates existing cooperation and gives it a political structure through regular meetings, annual secretary-level consultations, and sector-specific arrangements.
