What happened
The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare released crop-wise progress of Kharif area coverage as on 17 July 2026. The release tracks sowing across major Kharif crops and gives a direct snapshot of how the monsoon season is shaping agricultural acreage.
Kharif sowing data matter because India’s foodgrains, oilseeds, and cash crops remain closely linked to monsoon timing, rainfall distribution, and input availability. The figures are useful for understanding seasonal crop choices and for revising the structure of India’s Kharif basket.
UPSC can use Kharif area-coverage data to test crop classification, relative importance of rice, pulses, oilseeds, millets, cotton, sugarcane, and jute, and the policy challenge of shifting acreage towards pulses, oilseeds, and nutri-cereals while managing monsoon variability.
