What happened
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has continued modernisation, technological upgradation, and capacity augmentation of its facilities based on business requirements, market opportunities, and technological developments. The latest official update also says that BHEL has expanded testing capability and welding-skilling infrastructure under the Ministry of Heavy Industries’ Enhancement of Competitiveness in Indian Capital Goods Scheme (Phase II).
The development matters because BHEL is not only a major public sector engineering company, but also a supplier of equipment for power, strategic, and defence-related applications. The update links industrial capacity, quality testing, and skilling with India’s broader manufacturing competitiveness agenda.
What changed now
During FY 2025-26, BHEL incurred capital expenditure of Rs. 671 crore for expansion, modernisation, and capacity expansion of its facilities. The company has also set up advanced testing facilities for equipment used in strategic areas and advanced material testing facilities at Hyderabad and Bhopal.
BHEL has additionally set up Common Engineering Facility Centres for skilling in advanced welding technologies at six locations. According to the official reply, more than 10,000 welders have been trained through these centres.
