What happened
India enacted the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, 2025. The Act is positioned around the Nuclear Energy Mission, with a stated target to achieve nuclear power generation capacity of 100 GW by 2047 and with an emphasis on wider participation of public and private sectors.
Reactor capacity status reported by the government
Over the last ten years, the government reported construction or commissioning of 13 reactors with a total capacity of 10,600 MW. Among these, four reactors totaling 3,100 MW have commenced commercial operation. The remaining nine reactors totaling 7,500 MW are at different stages of construction/implementation.
What the government says is being scaled through approvals
The government reported administrative approval and financial sanction for ten indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors to be set up in fleet mode. It also reported two units of Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project units KKNPP-5&6 (2 × 1,000 MW) being set up in cooperation with the Russian Federation.
