What happened: Government targets expansion of coal gasification capacity with new schemes and support
The Ministry of Coal announced capacity targets and project-linked support for coal gasification to increase domestic coal’s value-added uses. The National Coal Gasification Mission target is achieving 100 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal gasification capacity by 2030.
Government information lists current operational and under-implementation capacity at about 22.6 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), including named projects and a set of approved projects under a financial incentive scheme.
Coal gasification projects by status and capacity (as stated): Jindal Steel Limited (JSL) ~8 MTPA operational; Talcher Fertilisers Limited (TFL) ~2.6 MTPA under implementation; eight projects under the ₹8,500 crore Financial Incentive Scheme approved on 24.01.2024 together ~12 MTPA under implementation.
