What happened: CGWB’s groundwater resource assessment (2025) and groundwater quality findings (2025)

The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) jointly with concerned State Governments/UT Administrations assessed Dynamic Ground Water Resources of India and estimated three annual values: annual groundwater recharge, annual extractable groundwater resource, and annual groundwater extraction for all uses (groundwater consumption).

CGWB also monitors groundwater quality through a groundwater quality monitoring programme and scientific studies under an approved Standard Operating Procedure (SoP), using more frequent and denser sampling in vulnerable areas.

Dynamic Ground Water Resources Assessment (2025): national totals and extraction stage

For the country, CGWB assessed (as per Dynamic Ground Water Resources Assessment 2025):

• Annual Ground Water Recharge: 449 Billion Cubic Metres (BCM)
