What happened (Parliament reply on vacancies and faculty hiring)
The Ministry of Education, Government of India, answered a Rajya Sabha question through a written reply by Minister of State for Education Dr Sukanta Majumdar. The reply focused on how faculty recruitment and vacancy backlog filling work in Central Higher Education Institutions (CHEIs) under the Ministry of Education, and it reported progress from Mission Mode recruitment drives.
Mission Mode backlog recruitment: reported progress
The Ministry of Education reported that CHEIs conducted special recruitment drives in Mission Mode to fill backlog vacancies. The Ministry stated that, up to 23.05.2026 (the date of the last Rozgar Mela), a total of 32,114 posts were filled by all CHEIs, including 18,757 faculty positions, through Mission Mode recruitment.
The Ministry also described a pattern of repeated calls to CHEIs for Mission Mode backlog filling:
In August 2021, all CHEIs under the Ministry of Education were requested to undertake a special drive to fill backlog vacancies in Mission Mode. CHEIs undertook special recruitment drives to fill vacancies including Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).In September 2022, the Ministry of Education exhorted all CHEIs to fill up vacancies in Mission Mode.In October 2025, all CHEIs were again requested to fill up all backlog vacancies in Mission Mode.From September 2022, CHEIs including Central Universities (CUs) undertook Mission Mode recruitment drives to fill the vacancies.
