The PIB backgrounder described the Government of India’s support for India’s coconut sector through (1) market support for copra via Minimum Support Price (MSP) and (2) supply-side interventions implemented through the Coconut Development Board (CDB). Reported sector scale and export performance
The PIB backgrounder stated that India’s coconut sector depends on a large rural workforce and that India occupies a leading global position in coconut production. It reported the following sector scale and comparative position:
- Nearly 30 million people depend on the coconut sector, including around 10 million farmers. - India ranks first in global coconut production. - Kerala leads in coconut area, Tamil Nadu leads in coconut production, and Andhra Pradesh leads in coconut productivity.
