What happened now (announcement date: 27 August 2026)
The Press Information Bureau Government of India announced that the Government has commenced calibrated and targeted release of onions from the buffer stock. The stated aim is to ensure adequate availability and moderate seasonal price pressures over the coming months.
The Government is executing the release through a hybrid transportation model combining railway rakes and road transport. Supply movement is being directed to major consumption centres based on prevailing market conditions and price trends, with the quantity, coverage and channels planned to be widened as conditions change.
What the Government says about onion availability
The Government states that onion availability is comfortable to meet domestic demand in the coming months. The comfort is linked to production estimates and buffer-stock support.
Key production figures stated by the Government are: 307.37 LMT of onion production in 2025-26 and 307.67 LMT in the previous year.
