What happened: Sarafa students protest a threatened relocation under a school-merger exercise
In Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, students at Maharani Lakshmibai Government Girls Senior Secondary School (Sarafa) protested after a school-merger exercise targeted Sarafa for relocation. The reported relocation destination was a school in Daudkhedi village, about 6 km away from Sarafa.
On the next working day after August 14, August 18, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and local officials visited Sarafa. A quoted BJP Member of Parliament said the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister directed that classes continue at Sarafa until alternate arrangements are made, and that administrative work would follow to identify and build a better facility at a suitable nearby site.
