Key takeaways
  • Dengue has four main virus types (DENV-1 to DENV-4). Different types can circulate in the same area at the same time.
  • Multi-serotype infection means a patient tests positive for more than one dengue serotype during the same illness episode.
  • ICMR’s VRDL network generates lab-confirmed data used to track which dengue serotypes are spreading across states and union territories.

What happened: ICMR VRDL surveillance reports simultaneous circulation of multiple dengue serotypes

An Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) nationwide surveillance study using the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL) network reports evidence that multiple dengue virus serotypes are circulating simultaneously in different regions of India. The ICMR study suggests dengue transmission may be moving into a more severe phase because multiple regions reported several serotypes together rather than only one dominant serotype.

The ICMR VRDL surveillance analysis examined thousands of laboratory-confirmed dengue samples across multiple states and union territories. The study reports that DENV-2 remained predominant, while a substantial proportion of patients had concurrent infections with multiple dengue serotypes. Several regions reportedly detected either all four dengue serotypes at the same time or three serotypes at the same time.

UPSC can frame dengue vaccination decisions as a public health governance task: use VRDL serotype surveillance evidence to decide where vaccination and preparedness need strengthening, while tracking how serotype dominance shifts may affect vaccine performance.
