The United Nations Secretary-General has named Rabab Fatima of Bangladesh as the new head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The appointment matters because UNAMA is the United Nations’ main political mission in Afghanistan and remains important to international engagement on governance, peace, and humanitarian coordination in the country.
The United Nations said Rabab Fatima is a career diplomat with experience in national and international civil service, diplomacy, policymaking, and programme implementation. She has also served as the United Nations’ high representative for least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, and small island developing states.
Rabab Fatima will replace Georgette Gagnon of Canada, who had been serving as deputy special representative and acting head of the mission.
