What happened: Kerala Cabinet announced ₹8 lakh relief for families of deceased flood victims

The Kerala Cabinet announced ₹8 lakh financial assistance for the kin of people killed in torrential rain and floods affecting large parts of Kerala over the previous week. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan stated that the death toll had risen to 26 and four people were still missing.

Relief camps formed part of the immediate response. Across districts, 27,048 people were reported lodged in 462 relief camps, with the most camps in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Alappuzha districts.

Compensation increases for flood-damaged housing

Kerala increased compensation amounts linked to flood damage to housing:

Fully damaged houses: compensation increased from ₹4 lakh to ₹6 lakh.Loss of both land and house: compensation increased from ₹10 lakh to ₹12 lakh.
