Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh have alleged that the ruling dispensation is increasing action against structures linked to the Muslim community for political advantage ahead of the next Assembly election. The Rampur Development Authority’s demolition notice against much of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University and demolition drives in Sambhal are cited as examples of the controversy.
Samajwadi Party MP Afzal Ansari has urged the Supreme Court of India to take notice. The Congress has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of practising everyday communalism to divide society. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has defended the government’s anti-mafia campaign and claimed that the state has crushed criminal networks, leaving offenders only jail or hell.
