Government data and Grid-India regulator-based calculations indicate that renewable power generation in July reached a record level and reduced coal’s share of India’s power-generation mix.
The reported figures for July include renewables at about 20% of India’s power mix, with renewables generating 36.25 billion kWh.
The reported comparisons use Grid-India daily regulator data to estimate coal’s share at 65.7% in July, compared with about 69% in June.
Solar and wind output were reported to exceed 100 gigawatts for the first time during mid-July, and solar-plus-wind were reported to provide 42.8% of electricity supply in mid-July.
An analyst noted that peak electricity demand is increasingly occurring during daytime, which tends to align with higher solar output and can increase the operational value of solar generation.
