What happened: Supreme Court proposes separate special courts for Manipur violence cases
The Supreme Court proposed special courts dedicated to handling Manipur ethnic-violence cases investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
A Bench led by the Chief Justice of India asked the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to create separate courts for day-to-day hearings of CBI-linked and NIA-linked cases concerning the 2023 Manipur violence.
The Supreme Court asked for a status report by the next hearing date. In that status mapping, the Supreme Court reviewed investigation stages, including whether cases are ready to proceed through the correct trial forum.
The Supreme Court also asked whether the special court arrangement can focus exclusively on Manipur-related matters, with other cases transferred elsewhere.
