What happened: Himachal Pradesh plans a ₹10 lakh family health insurance scheme for poor households
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the Himachal Pradesh government is preparing to launch a family health insurance scheme for economically weaker households. Sukhu stated that the proposed policy would provide eligible poor families insurance coverage up to ₹10 lakh at a highly affordable premium. Sukhu also stated that nearly 10 lakh families would be covered under the proposed policy. The announcement came at a high-level Health Department meeting in Shimla.
Background: health insurance as a tool in health financing
Health insurance for vulnerable households is used to reduce the financial risk of hospitalization. State governments typically have to pair benefit design (what coverage caps exist) with implementation mechanisms (how beneficiaries are identified and how hospitals provide care under the scheme).
What changed now: stated coverage ceiling and large enrolment intent
The Himachal Pradesh government’s stated proposal includes a measurable benefit ceiling and an inclusion scale. Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated insurance coverage up to ₹10 lakh for eligible poor families and stated a highly affordable or nominal premium for those eligible families. The Chief Minister also stated that nearly 10 lakh families would be included under the proposed policy.
