What happened
A New Mexico state court ordered Meta to pay $567 million and to restrict certain features for children on Facebook and Instagram. The court found that Meta’s conduct amounted to a “public nuisance” that endangered young users.
Background and earlier position
The New Mexico ruling was described as building on an earlier penalty of $375 million in the same case. That earlier penalty was issued in March.
What changed now
The New Mexico order added an additional financial penalty and also required Meta to implement restrictions on certain Facebook and Instagram features for children. The remedies therefore extended from payment to concrete platform functionality limits.
