What happened

An international clinical trial, NeoSep 1, has expanded to India to study better treatment for neonatal sepsis in the context of rising antimicrobial resistance. The trial is coordinated by GARDP with partners including UCL’s Innovative Clinical Trials Unit, City St George’s, and Penta Foundation.

Indian enrolment has started at JIPMER, Puducherry and Pt. B.D. Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak, with further recruitment planned at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal College and General Hospital, Mumbai. The trial is already running in Vietnam and Pakistan, and is expected to begin soon in Malaysia, Bangladesh and Uganda.

Why the trial matters

Neonatal sepsis is a life-threatening bloodstream infection in infants below 90 days. It is especially common in premature and low-birth-weight babies. The article says it remains a major contributor to neonatal mortality in India, accounting for roughly 30–40% of neonatal deaths, or around 200,000–250,000 preventable deaths every year.

The public health problem is not only the burden of infection, but also the mismatch between local pathogens and existing treatment assumptions. India’s neonatal infections are often caused by gram-negative organisms such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, E. coli, Acinetobacter species and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with frequent multidrug resistance. By contrast, Group B Streptococcus, a leading cause in developed countries, accounts for only about 2–5% in India.
