Rescue teams recovered the body of the final missing person from the Moshi waste processing unit collapse near Pune, taking the confirmed death toll to nine. The victim was identified as Waman Kasbe, the last missing person after earlier rescues.

The collapsed structure was a three-storey administrative building of a Waste-to-Energy plant operated by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The site had already yielded 14 rescues before the final recovery.

A senior official described the July 8 collapse as an “act of God”. The same account says that a mound of garbage adjacent to the building fell onto the structure like a landslide.

The UPSC angle · GS2 · GS3

UPSC can ask how urban local bodies, disaster-response systems, and infrastructure safety norms interact when public utilities fail. The Moshi collapse is relevant for questions on municipal governance, waste-to-energy projects, and the need for preventive risk assessment rather than post-disaster compensation.
