What happened
According to the Press Information Bureau release, U.S. Central Command said it targeted coastal defence systems, missile and drone sites, and maritime capabilities. The stated aim was to raise the cost to Iranian forces and reduce their ability to attack civilians and commercial shipping.
Iran retaliated by attacking Bahrain, Jordan, and three tankers that travelled through the strait. Two of the tankers were linked to the United Arab Emirates.
The Emirati Defence Ministry said the attacks on the vessels Mombasa and Al Bahiyah killed one mariner and wounded eight. A Dutch tanker operator reported an engine-room fire after an attack, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the vessels ignored warnings.
