BITS Pilani researchers working with IBM Quantum have reported a quantum-computing result that IBM’s Quantum Advantage Tracker currently marks as active. The claim matters because quantum computers are not inherently faster than conventional computers; their advantage appears mainly in specialised simulation problems involving complex quantum systems.
What happened
The team simulated subatomic particle behaviour using an IBM processor with 120 qubits. The quantum machine reportedly completed the calculation in about 20 seconds, while the comparison task on a classical computer took roughly two hours.
IBM’s Quantum Advantage Tracker is described as a live, peer-review-style validation mechanism. Submitted claims are tested on both quantum and classical systems, and only a small fraction are accepted; few remain active.
Why the result is scientifically significant
Quantum computers are not designed to speed up ordinary arithmetic. Their potential advantage appears in systems with complex interacting quantum particles, where classical simulation becomes computationally expensive.
