What happened
Researchers observed a rifting and eruption event in the Indian Ocean using underwater sensors. In April 2024, the sensors detected magma moving beneath the crust, the sea floor sinking by several metres, and the crust spreading apart by more than about a metre.
The sequence reportedly culminated in an eruption that produced a large volume of lava over about two weeks. Much of the movement occurred without severe earthquakes, which makes the event scientifically notable.
UPSC can use this case to test how rifting, magma intrusion, and volcanic eruption alter oceanic crust. The event also helps explain why some tectonic separation can occur with limited seismicity, which is a useful geography and geoscience concept.
