What happened
Iran’s leadership threatened a “devastating” response after the United States pledged new economic measures aimed at Iran. Scott Bessent, United States Treasury chief, said the United States would impose “the toughest financial penalties in history” targeting Iran’s leadership.
Scott Bessent said the United States would provide sanctions details on Monday. President Donald Trump warned that any country offering Iran “any type of lifeline” could face economic consequences from the United States.
Iran’s military leadership, including Major General Ali Abdollahi (chief of staff of the Armed Forces), said Iran’s forces would respond broadly and decisively with “crushing and punishing retaliation.” Iran described its retaliation across land, sea, air, air defence and cyberspace.
