What happened: PNGRB authorises LPG pipeline infrastructure across six states

Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) authorised the development of about 1,800 km of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) pipeline infrastructure for transporting LPG across six states. The authorised geography is Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Goa.

The authorised LPG pipeline projects are estimated to require about ₹7,000 crore of capital investment, and GAIL (India) Ltd is set to develop the pipeline network.

Background and earlier position: why LPG pipelines matter

LPG is commonly delivered through multiple channels such as cylinder distribution and, where available, pipeline supply to bulk consumers. LPG pipelines move LPG in bulk across regions, which can affect supply reliability, logistics time and cost, and the ability to serve industrial and large retail customers more consistently.

In the petroleum and natural gas sector, PNGRB’s authorisations support pipeline development and operations by setting the basis for who can build and operate relevant pipeline infrastructure and under what regulatory framework.
