What happened: Jharkhand asks the Centre to close scholarship funding gaps
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging a funding gap of more than ₹700 crore in central scholarship support over the last two financial years. Soren said the alleged shortfall has adversely affected lakhs of students and requested Centre intervention to resolve it. Soren asked for enhanced Centre allocations for both pre-matric and post-matric scholarships and asked for resumption of assistance for minority-community students.

In the letter, Hemant Soren claimed that Jharkhand sought certain scholarship amounts for specific years, but the Centre released much smaller sums. The letter cites the following figures:
For 2025–26 post-matric scholarships, Jharkhand sought ₹370.87 crore but the Centre released only ₹58.22 crore.
For 2024–25 post-matric scholarships, Jharkhand demanded ₹353.21 crore but the Centre released only ₹33.57 crore.
