What happened
An explosion occurred in a coal mine in southwest Pakistan near Quetta on 31 July 2026, killing at least 11 miners and trapping 31 others underground. Mine officials reportedly believed the trapped miners faced life-threatening conditions. Rescuers were racing to reach the trapped miners as emergency operations were underway.

Officials attributed the blast to a buildup of methane gas in the coal mine. Methane is a flammable gas, and coal mining conditions can allow methane to accumulate.
