What happened (Supreme Court action on Senthilbalaji’s pre-arrest bail appeal)

The Supreme Court agreed to urgently hear the appeal filed by former DMK Minister for Prohibition, Electricity and Excise V. Senthilbalaji against the Madras High Court’s refusal to grant pre-arrest bail.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant heard an oral mention seeking urgent listing.

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Mukul Rohatgi argued for V. Senthilbalaji, and Amit Anand Tiwari also appeared.

V. Senthilbalaji’s defence argued that the FIR allegations should be evaluated in light of earlier material filed in the Supreme Court and in light of whether custodial interrogation is genuinely needed at the bail stage.
