All Ladakh districts to get autonomous hill councils

Ladakh’s administration has announced 17 new tehsils and said the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Act will be extended across all seven districts. The move is aimed at strengthening grassroots governance in the Union Territory and bringing services closer to remote villages.
The issue is important for UPSC because it combines Union Territory administration, decentralisation, and the protection of local identity in a strategically sensitive region. It also raises questions about how legal and institutional safeguards are adapted when a territory expands its district and sub-district structure.

UPSC may ask how administrative reorganisation, local self-governance, and protection of land and cultural rights can be balanced in Union Territories such as Ladakh.
