What happened

Aditya Birla Renewables Ltd. (ABRen), a subsidiary of Grasim Industries, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100% equity and related securities of Solenergi Power Private Ltd., the owner of the Sprng Energy group, from Shell Overseas Investment B.V. The deal is valued at ₹17,200 crore, or about $1.8 billion.

The acquisition is expected to add a 5 GWp contracted renewable portfolio, including 3.3 GWp of operating capacity and 1.7 GWp under construction, along with grid connectivity and a development pipeline.

Why the transaction matters

The deal signals continued consolidation in India’s renewable-energy sector. A portfolio with operating assets, projects under construction, and grid connectivity is more valuable than isolated project announcements because it provides a ready-to-build clean-energy base.

For UPSC, the transaction links to energy security, private capital in infrastructure, the economics of the power sector, and India’s broader transition toward low-carbon electricity.
