What happened
Families of Indian seafarers killed in attacks near the Strait of Hormuz have asked the Union government to take up the matter internationally and seek relief for the bereaved families. At a press conference organised by the Forward Seamen’s Union of India, relatives demanded an official petition at the United Nations, compensation from the United States and Iran, and support for dependents of the deceased.
Claims and demands raised by the families
The families said the ship-owning companies did not properly inform them about the attacks or the deaths. Speakers including Elamaram Karim and V. Sivadasan accused the government of ignoring seafarers’ concerns. The relatives sought $5 million compensation for each family, ₹1 crore ex gratia per family, and a government job for one dependent of each deceased seafarer.
