What happened: 10 lakh tonnes raw sugar import permitted; prices eased but volatility persisted

The government permitted import of 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar. Domestic sugar prices eased after the import permission, but industry participants continued to express concern about price volatility (sharp price movement over short periods).

Reported ex-mill prices (factory gate prices, before distribution and retail margins) moved across the sugar marketing season as follows:

• The sugar marketing season starts on October 1. At the start of the season, sugar sold at ₹38–39 per kg (ex-mill price).

• In January, prices rose to around ₹48 per kg.

• Reported ex-mill prices included ₹58 per kg on August 22 and ₹62 per kg on August 21.
