The West Bengal Cabinet has decided to establish a committee led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to scrutinize the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. The committee is expected to review the legislation and report back in four weeks.
The state's proposal aims to enforce gender parity in property rights and address polygamy and child marriage, while excluding Adivasi communities.
