What happened in Mokha (reported)

Houthi attacks in Yemen’s port city of Mokha on Sunday were reported to have killed at least 11 people. The reported attack included a drone salvo and strikes aimed at a Saudi Arabian oil refinery on the Red Sea coast.

A medical source in Mokha attributed deaths to both civilians and military personnel. Government sources described Houthis using multiple waves of missiles and drones.

A Houthi spokesperson said the Houthis targeted Saudi forces and equipment.

Background and earlier position (Yemen civil war and truce breakdown)

The Mokha attack was linked to the breakdown of a years-long truce in Yemen’s civil war. Yemen’s civil war involves the Houthis and the Saudi-backed internationally recognised Yemeni government. Renewed fighting between rebels and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia occurred in the weeks before the Mokha attacks.
