What happened

Mizoram’s Chief Minister and Christian institutions appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to withdraw the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and refer the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further consultation.

Sources indicated the Centre may consider the request despite an earlier plan to discuss passage in the Lok Sabha on August 12, with the Monsoon Session scheduled to end August 13.

Christian bodies including the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI), and the Council of Churches in Mizoram issued coordinated appeals on social media.

Background and earlier position

CBCI, NCCI, and the Council of Churches in Mizoram said they raised objections with Amit Shah since early July, arguing that the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2026 poses concerns for minorities—particularly Christians.
