What happened: TTFI suspension by the Sports Ministry
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports suspended the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) as a National Sports Federation due to repeated non-compliance with government directions, governance deficiencies, and concerns relating to athlete welfare and selection procedures. The suspension followed a show-cause notice dated June 30 and a TTFI response dated July 7, which the Ministry considered inadequate.
The Ministry cited persistent differences between TTFI President Meghna Ahlawat and TTFI Secretary General Kamlesh Mehta, alleging disruption in institutional decision-making and reduced confidence in governance. Financial transparency was also cited, including delays in adopting and uploading audited financial statements for 2023-24 and 2024-25.
During the suspension period, TTFI was made ineligible for government financial assistance and other benefits tied to NSF recognition. The Ministry proposed an interim mechanism to protect athlete participation and continuity.
Interim arrangements: Indian Olympic Association, ITTF consultation, and ad hoc management
The Sports Ministry directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to consult the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and set up an ad hoc committee to manage Indian table tennis players until compliant governance is restored at TTFI.
