What happened in the Rajya Sabha
The Rajya Sabha passed two bills during the Monsoon Session: the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026. Bill 2: Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026
The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 continues the Kerala Assembly’s 2024 resolution requesting the Union government to change the State’s name to “Keralam”. In the debate, the Minister of State for Home Affairs linked the renaming proposal to the Union government’s commitment to removing symbols of slavery and changing names, signs, flags of institutions, or statues of prominent individuals that the Union government views as repeatedly hurting Indian sentiments and representing heritage pride.
