What happened (Supreme Court notice on a polygamy petition)
The Supreme Court of India sought a response from the Union government on a petition seeking to declare polygamy among Muslims unconstitutional and to direct legislative steps to abolish the practice for all citizens irrespective of religion.
A Supreme Court Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant issued notice to the Union government on the petition filed by activist Zakia Soman and others.
The petitioners were represented by advocates Shriya and Rajive Maini.
Background and earlier legal position (what the petition challenges)
The petitioners asked the Supreme Court to apply Section 82 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (a criminal law provision that penalises bigamy) in a uniform way, including by removing exemptions linked to Muslim personal law.
