What happened: NCS released two updated earthquake resources on MoES Foundation Day
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) National Centre for Seismology (NCS) released seismological compendium and strong-motion atlas materials on MoES Foundation Day. The releases strengthen access to earthquake data from India’s National Seismological Network and strong-motion recordings used in hazard assessment and earthquake engineering.
What happened in the two releases
NCS released the following datasets/materials: Compendium of Monthly Seismological Bulletins (2023 & 2024): A publication providing validated earthquake catalogues, phase data, and hypocentral parameters sourced from the National Seismological Network (NSN). Strong Motion Atlas of India (2010–2020): A compilation of strong ground-motion records and accelerograms for earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and above, intended to support earthquake engineering and hazard assessment.
Background and earlier position: why NCS datasets matter
NCS supports seismic monitoring through the National Seismological Network (NSN). Seismic bulletins and compiled datasets help researchers and agencies use consistent, processed earthquake information (such as event locations and wave-phase observations) instead of relying only on raw field signals. In parallel, strong-motion recordings (accelerograms and ground-motion data) are used to relate earthquake shaking to engineering design inputs.
