What happened: ex-gratia assistance and human–wildlife conflict management measures
The Government of India supports communities to improve coexistence with wildlife by combining (1) ex-gratia assistance for incidents involving wildlife and (2) conflict-management governance tools guided by the Human-Wildlife Conflict Advisory and elephant-specific conflict mitigation guidelines. These measures aim to reduce harm to people while also supporting wildlife conservation in elephant landscapes.
Ex-gratia assistance under Centrally Sponsored Schemes
The Government provides ex-gratia assistance under the Centrally Sponsored Schemes Project Tiger and Elephant and Development of Wildlife Habitats. The assistance categories and amounts stated are:
• ₹10 lakh for death or permanent incapacitation • ₹2 lakh for grievous injury • treatment costs up to ₹25,000 for minor injuries • compensation for crop and property losses, as per State and Union Territory norms
