In a significant development for India's energy landscape, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate a coal gasification project worth Rs 25,016 crore in Odisha on June 20, 2026. This project marks India’s first commercial-scale coal-to-ammonium nitrate initiative, aimed at bolstering energy security.
Coal gasification is being recognized as a pivotal component for reducing reliance on imported coal resources and enhancing domestic production capabilities, allowing for the creation of valuable products like ammonia and methanol.
India, being the second-largest coal producer globally, has substantial reserves, estimated at over 400 billion tonnes. By leveraging these resources through advanced gasification technologies, the country can foster industrial growth and greatly diminish import dependency.
