What happened (key reforms announced by the Ministry of Defence)?
The Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence announced reforms to simplify the Defence Export Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and the Open General Export Licence (OGEL) framework. The stated policy goal is faster access to international markets for Indian defence companies, including MSMEs, while ensuring national security safeguards remain in place.
Defence Export SOP: consultation and approvals made easier for many exports
The Ministry of Defence announced changes in stakeholder consultation requirements for certain defence export cases:
Stakeholder consultation has been dispensed with for exports of non-lethal defence items to most destinations. The announcement also states that “appropriate safeguards” are retained for sensitive countries.Stakeholder consultation has been dispensed with for exports of all items for international tenders and exhibitions. This is intended to let Indian companies showcase products and pursue opportunities more expeditiously.
