What happened
President Droupadi Murmu graced the first convocation of the Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh at Vizianagaram on June 30, 2026. The Presidential address presented the university as an institution with responsibilities beyond degrees and examinations, especially in the fields of tribal welfare, education, and local development.
The President said the university should become a hub for building self-confidence, leadership, and policy-making capability among tribal communities. She also linked the university’s role to social justice, grassroots work, and the development of education, health, skills, livelihoods, and forest rights for tribal communities in the region.
Background and earlier position
The address placed the university within the larger public-policy idea that higher education institutions serving tribal regions should also support community development. The university is already operating a Science and Technology Hub for tribal communities in North Andhra Pradesh, according to the Presidential address.
The speech also noted the university’s work in tribal welfare, public health, climate change, food and nutrition security, and energy conservation. These areas show a shift from narrow classroom teaching to an outreach model that combines academic work with local problem-solving.
