What happened
The 91st Meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) was chaired by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav at Coimbatore. The meeting reviewed conservation progress, earlier directions of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), and more than 100 proposals linked to wildlife clearance.
What was discussed
The committee focused on species conservation, scientific monitoring and project appraisal. It also reviewed decisions from the 7th NBWL Meeting and discussed conservation initiatives that affect threatened species and wildlife habitats.
Key conservation issues
The Minister stressed that wildlife conservation is central to India’s environmental governance. He said that decision-making for development projects in and around wildlife habitats should be guided by scientific planning, habitat connectivity and effective mitigation measures. He also called for solution-based policy interventions using technological and sociological studies and traditional knowledge.
