The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) reviewed urban groundwater-recharge work across 75 AMRUT cities under the Catch the Rain campaign. The interaction matters because urban water security now depends not only on supply augmentation but also on aquifer recharge, stormwater management, and local stewardship.
What happened
MoHUA, in collaboration with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), organised a national interaction for cities implementing the Shallow Aquifer Management (SAM) programme under AMRUT.
The event brought together representatives of 75 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to share progress, exchange best practices, and present completed groundwater-recharge interventions.
Programme design and interventions
The SAM programme supports cities through scientific planning and technical handholding for groundwater recharge. The stated objective is to improve urban water security through sustainable rainwater harvesting, aquifer replenishment, and climate resilience.
