What happened: Rajasthan schedules ULB elections in two phases
Rajasthan scheduled elections for all 309 urban local bodies (ULBs) in two phases: September 9 and September 11. Vote counting is scheduled for September 14.
The nomination process begins with the notification on August 27. After the election declaration, the Model Code of Conduct (election conduct rules that restrict misuse of official power) is reported to have come into force.
The State Election Commissioner, Rajasthan, Rajeshwar Singh stated that general meetings for municipal corporations, municipal councils, and municipalities would be held on September 22. During these general meetings, elections for deputy mayors, deputy chairpersons, and municipal vice-chairpersons are expected.
Background: ULB polls are to finish before Panchayati Raj polls
A Rajasthan High Court direction requires the State government of Rajasthan to finish local body polls by November. Based on this direction, elections to Panchayati Raj institutions are planned after the completion of local body polls (with ULB elections first).
