Bharat Taxi is a cooperative-based mobility platform developed by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited (STCL). The release presents it as an alternative to investor-driven aggregator models because drivers are treated as member-owners, not only service providers.
The model matters for UPSC because it combines cooperative governance, digital mobility services, and questions of fair income distribution. The release also shows how a national cooperative institution can enter the ride-hailing space through a technology platform.
What happened
According to the Union Ministry of Cooperation, STCL was registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002 and established on 6 June 2025 by eight national-level cooperative institutions. It was officially launched on 5 February 2026 under the aegis of the Ministry of Cooperation.
The Bharat Taxi model is described as a shift from the conventional driver-partner model to a Sarathi-owner model. Under that structure, drivers become members of the cooperative society, participate in governance through representation on the Board of Management, and share the cooperative surplus.
