Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) is building its seed distribution presence in Bihar through a designated nodal agency, field-level coordination, and cooperative societies rather than a formal branch office. The Union government said this arrangement matters because it shows how a cooperative institution can work through existing state and local networks to manage seed supply, monitoring, and farmer-facing procurement.
What happened
The Ministry of Cooperation informed the Rajya Sabha that BBSSL does not presently have a formal branch office in Bihar. BBSSL nevertheless has an operational presence in the State through a field official who coordinates seed distribution, business development, and monitoring of seed-related activities.
BBSSL is also undertaking seed business in Bihar through the Bihar Rajya Beej Nigam Limited, which acts as the designated nodal agency. BBSSL said seed production and distribution are being coordinated with the nodal agency, local cooperative institutions, and other stakeholders.
The Union government also said BBSSL supplied various crop seeds directly to 20 cooperative societies in Bihar during financial year 2026–27, strengthening a cooperative-based distribution network in the State.
