What happened: toy industry promotion plus a safety-and-quality push
The Government of India highlighted its initiatives to improve toy quality and safety and to boost the Indian toy industry. The Toy Association of India organized the 17th Toy Biz International B2B Exhibition from 4 July to 7 July 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, with 400 Indian toy brands, 100 international buyers from 40 countries, and around 30,000 business visitors. The exhibition aimed to promote Indian toys and create opportunities for growth in domestic sales and exports.
Background and earlier position: concerns about imports and weak quality
The Government states that there is currently no dedicated toy policy of the Government of India. It also cited earlier quality concerns: in 2018-19, toys worth USD 371.7 million were imported into India, with a large proportion reported as unsafe, substandard, counterfeit, and cheap. A 2019 “Mystery Shopping” exercise found that only 33% of toys in the domestic market met acceptable quality standards as per BIS.
